How Can I Use a Site Map to Improve My SEO?

Well, If you can help Google find all of your pages as quickly as possible it is going to really help you with your SEO. If your site has many pages then you need to let Google know. One of the best ways of doing this is by creating a Site Map. A Site Map is simply a list of all of the pages on your website, including URL’s, that may not be discovered by Google’s normal crawling process.
Depending on how your website is set up, there may already be a site map built in to it. If so, it would pay to submit that site map to Google via Google Webmaster Tools. Doing this will make Google aware of all of the pages on your site. Simply search Google for: Google Webmaster Tools.
Alternatively, you can easily create a Site Map yourself. A Site Map Page is just a page on your website that contains links to all of the other pages on your website. By putting a link on your Home Page to your Site Map Page, it will ensure that Google’s Spiders find all of the pages on your site in just 2 clicks, meaning Google can easily index your pages.
If there are pages you do not want Google to index then simply leave these off your Site Map Page.
Example of a Site Map Page:
Let us say John Bloggs Watches has a website which has 10 pages consisting of 5 upper level pages as follows:
Home
About Us
Gallery
Watches
Contact Us
and 5 lower level pages under the Watches Page as follows:
Diamond Watches
Gold Watches
Silver Watches
Gents Watches
Ladies Watches
The text/links on the Site Map Page would appear something like this:
John Bloggs Watches – Site Map
Home
About Us
Gallery
Services
Diamond Watches
Gold Watches
Silver Watches
Gents Watches
Ladies Watches
Contact Us
As you can see above, all of the page names would link to the relevant pages making it easy for Google, and your visitors, to see all of your pages instantly.
